If it ain’t broke…

…don’t fix it. This week’s post was prompted by a question from one of my favorite people, Matt, the manager at CryoPure, where I go every week to freeze my you-know-what’s-off. As I was passing my three minutes at 270 below zero, he asked me how my supplements were going and if I’ve changed anything. My reply was, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” Something is working- I don’t know what. But I’m sure not going to start screwing around now.

This got me thinking about life after this diagnosis and what got me to this point. Originally, I’d come home from school and spend a couple of hours researching everything I could about Lou Gehrig’s disease. The volume of information is daunting, much of which is written in a language I don’t speak. Along with all the scientific data, there is an equal amount of information out there claiming they have a cure. (When you’ve been told that modern medicine has nothing to offer you, these sites become even more enticing.)
This song touched me because of how hopeless I felt… but ultimately the situation hasn’t been hopeless at all.
Over the next few months, I came up with my routine by continuing to read everything I could find and even pausing an interview with an ALS patient to see what was in his medicine cabinet in the background. If things made some kind of sense to me, I was willing to give it a shot. As I write, I’m taking about 20 supplements a day. Nothing crazy, just over-the-counter products to help my body function as well as it can.
I continue to read all the new results coming from various studies going on, but my research time has dropped dramatically. As I’ve mentioned before, post-diagnosis, my life got so much better. I enjoy every day. Actually, that’s not accurate. I’m enjoying every minute of every day and spending much of my time just counting my blessings, both past and present. So….if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
So today, and every day, I celebrate…
The number one supplement that I will recommend to everyone has been prayer. A very good friend of mine introduced me to a doctor who has a unique technique for healing yourself. After reading his books and findings, I am incorporating many of his practices into my prayerful meditations and learning how to ask my body to heal itself. I find that when I partner this with my faith, good things happen. And the bad stops happening.
As I was thinking about how to write this week’s post, two songs popped up on Pandora that really hit home for me.
As I think and write about prayer, this song says it all…
And all I can think of as I go through all of this is….
Getting home from vacation less than a week before the Les Turner ALS Walk for Life has been very hectic to say the least. Just because we were on vacation didn’t mean the grass stopped growing and all of our responsibilities back home took a break. And…I just learned the Mustang is in, but we can’t find a time to go get it. Because of all our self-made turmoil, this week’s post will be a little short (you can thank me at the Walk).
As I wrap up this week and prepare for the Walk tomorrow, I just want to say a heartfelt thank you to all who have signed up and/or donated. And a thank you to all of you as well, who follow along each week as I sail these troubled waters.
Have a great weekend. I hope your team wins (unless you’re rooting for Auburn). Boomer Sooner!
God bless.
Coach
